Lonny Magazine

It's gorgeous, jam packed full of colorful inspiration, and it's free. Lonny's December issue is live. I want to pick a favorite article, but it's impossible. Favorite feature...the tips at the end of each story. I can't recall a single print magazine that contained this much satisfying content in one issue.

Storm of the Decade

I woke up this morning to the wind pounding the house, turned off my alarm and immediately went back to sleep.  By 7:30, light was flooding the house, but outside it looked like a completely different world.

The grass in our front yard is completely exposed, as is our patio, even though we've received over a foot of snow, because the wind has stacked it in drifts against the house, fence and every other vertical surface. I wanted to walk out to the road, or even the orchard, but I didn't get very far because the snow in our driveway is well over my knees in depth.

The dogs thought it was fun for about five minutes, but agreed that being cozy inside was probably a better choice than running through the fields.

Snow Day

And this is just the beginning...

Cooking Light Way To Cook - Round 2

Last week, we made another recipe from our new Cooking Light cookbook - Spicy Honey Brushed Chicken Thighs - and enjoyed them while watching Top Chef (we're rooting for Kevin all the way).  This recipe was so easy, and the flavor was really great. I'm not a big fan of dark meat poultry, but I did enjoy these quite a bit. I think it helped that I bought Smart Chicken - these thighs were huge!  We made the same amount of spice rub and sauce for four thighs even though the recipe calls for eight. Otherwise, I followed the instructions exactly. We served them with roasted red potatoes and a little cucumber, tomato and feta salad.

Spicy Honey Brushed Chicken Thighs
  • 2 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 2 tsp Chili Powder
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Ground Cumin
  • 1 tsp Paprika
  • 1/2 tsp Ground Red Pepper
  • 8 Skinless Boneless Chicken Thighs
  • Cooking Spray
  • 6 Tbsp Honey
  • 2 tsp Cider Vinegar
  • 8 Chicken Thighs
1. Preheat the broiler and broiler pan.
2. Combine first six ingredients in a large bowl. Add chicken to bowl and toss to coat. Place chicken on broiler pan coated with cooking spray. Broil chicken five minutes on each side.
3. Combine honey and vinegar in a small bowl, stir well. Remove chicken from oven; brush 1/4 cup honey mixture on chicken. Broil one minute. Remove chicken and turn over. Brush with remaining honey mixture. Broil one additional minute or until chicken is done.

We did find that our chicken needed a few extra minutes under the broiler.  I also think if you were making eight thighs, you might want to double the sauce to be sure you have enough. The best part of this recipe was that all the ingredients except the chicken were pantry items we had on hand.

Enjoy!

Pet Presents

This photo has totally been cracking me up for the last two days.  My dogs would never, in a million years, put up with this...but I wish they would, for at least one photo.

When I lived in Portland, I tried to make Miles wear a Friendly Leader, and we would walk all through the Northwest District - me dragging my dog with with his face plastered to the ground and butt in the air, trying to rub the damn thing off his face while passing cars and pedestrian gawked at us.  I expect the Dobersnood would meet a similar fate, and I applaud this dog for his stoicism.
